Unfair

By Anonymous - This FML is from back in 2015 but it's good stuff - United States - Bonita Springs

Today, my sister got promoted to manager at the store we both work at. Since company policy states that siblings can't work at the same store if one of them is a manager, I was let go. FML

They should have moved you or her to another location.

Honestly OP, it sounds like you could find better places to work anyway.

I would feel really bad if my sister had to turn down a promotion just so I could keep my job but I'd also feel loved and supported by her. I could understand if you told her to go for it but I'm assuming she did this without even talking to you about it first.

Shouldn't that have been mentioned before you both started working there?

That's a horrible situation. If it were my sister, I would've told her to accept the promotion, however I'd be conflicted because then I'd be out of a job. I hope you find a better place, OP, because that definitely sucks. Good luck!

.. Dont be upset at your sister. Support her. you'll find something better..

That's a weird policy for a store to have... I hope you find another job where you are happier and make more money!

it's more common than you think. it creates a conflict of interest.

I call BS on this. Most companies that have rules like this(Town Pump Inc in Montana does) if siblings/family members are working at one place when 1 of the family is promoted they move the 2nd family member to a new location, usually within driving distance if possible.

It's store policy. Yeah it sucks. But it's the rules so get over it. She's a good worker

It might be store policy, but they should have offered to send OP to another location instead of letting them go.

They probably just used that as an excuse to fire you.

Well, she should be a reeel good reference for the next job. Not only family but she kinda owes ya.

Am I the only one who thinks that this rule is complete bull?

You're not. It's one thing to not hire a close relative of a manager. What this store did may be legal and part of the company policy, but it's a bad rule.
