It may have been dark in the kitchen, but was dark in the rest of the house when you made your way to your child's bedroom?
I'm sure you can feel the difference between a bowl and a strainer...... VERY different textures. FAIL.
Why not just let him throw up in the sink if you're already in the kitchen? Or take him to the bathroom?

Why would you wear a new outfit when your son is sick and puking?
I'm sorry, OP. I really feel for you, but I have two problems with your story, so I had to vote YDI. First, why why WHY would you wear anything new and nice around someone who's puking, much less a youngster who doesn't have the mental cognition to aim his spew. Second, I can't believe that you picked up a strainer without there being obvious clues (that you should have noticed) that it was not a bowl: weight, feeling the texture of holes when you grab it or set it on your lap, it having handles.

It's called a light switch. Turn it on.
you should be worried about your kid being sick. not your outfit getting ruined, because that is easily washed. o_O
