Whiter shade of pale

Today, my coworker said that she suddenly got the shivers. I jokingly told her that it meant she must be being watched by a dead person and made stupid ghost noises. She then told me it was the anniversary of her dad's death and burst into tears. FML

That's incredibly rough, but from the sound of it you couldn't have known OP. As long as it was an honest mistake, try not to be too hard on yourself.

No way you could have known, you were trying to bring levity to her situation. I hope an apology brought her back around.

Damage is done, there is no way you could have known. Probably best to just a stick your foot in your mouth and leave them be for the day.

thats what happens when you joke about dead

It. hurts to know more doesn't it? Coincidence that could be her father causing the shiver. Better get an evp so she can talk to him. If they do actually work?. But again comfort her and make her happy.

As people have said above, there's no way you could have known so don't blame yourself for that. However I still think ghost noises are stupid at the best of times. I hope you apologised a lot!

Yeah I voted YDI not for the foot-in-mouth but for making a really shitty, unfunny joke.

You probably should have said something like, "Then you know your dad is still watching over you from wherever he is."

Clearly, her father set this up from beyond the grave because he doesn't approve of your relationship.

"When speaking of the dead, it is best to remain cryptic."
