That sucks, but why didn't she excuse herself from class? There would be no shame in that and she wouldn't have to explain what just looks like hypocrisy
A bit like the time I chided my boss for watching TV during work time - only to realise the WTC "attack" was on the news.
At that point I would get up and she would say "where are you going?" And I would simply say "the deans office"
You didn't know, she could've said it nicer.
Something similar happened to me in reverse. My teacher kept teasing me for missing school one day. I looked at him and asked would it be okay with him if my excuse was that I was at my grandpa's funeral. But I did this after class, when I was walking out the door and no one else could hear me. I think I made him feel bad.

I feel so bad for your teacher! what a terrible thing to happen! On that note she should not bring it into the classroom. She should take a few days off to plan and mourn if needed. You were just trying to joke around but now I guess you know! It is just an all a round bad situation.
