Commenting to # 12, it's actually required by most companies to close the store down after a robbery to call the police and to prevent the robber from coming back. And in Canada and the US it would be against the law to dock her hours after closing the store due to an extremely stressful situation such as a robbery. OP, call the labor board, or human ressources and file a complaint.
Not only is it usually required by companies, the police will usually tell you to close the store while they're collecting their report. Simply because the OP had to close the store early doesn't mean that it was their decision, or that they simply went home because they were upset.
I know it sucks but I agree with your boss. You didn't work those two and a half hours. If you stayed around, talking to police, etc. for the rest of your shift then fine. If you closed the store because you were upset... then no. I wouldn't pay you if say, you left because your dog died. So I wouldn't pay you if you were too upset to work. It sucks, sure, but don't expect free money.
they have to pay you still. I know that's how it is here in Canada trust me O've worked at a liquor store. and in the event of a robbery you still get paid even when you leave. they have to close the store down. you can't leave it opened any longer that night. and seriously who the he'll cares they close at 2:00 a.m here, and in my old town 11:00 p.m. so I mean depending on what tine it was wow they have to pay her like thirty bucks. who gives a shit.
Why should he pay you? You didn't work the hours. And you shouldn't have your phone and laptop at work with you. You're there to work, not talk and get online. Sounds like you shouldn't even be paid for half the hours you did "work". YDI.
No, she probably had to spend that time filing a report though. The OP didn't say what she did for a job so you can't really say she shouldn't have had her phone or laptop with her. At any rate, just because she had them with her doesn't mean she was using them. I can't really imagine you being in the same situation and not complaining as well.
twinklestar and boatkicker, you are both very intelligent. I enjoy reading your comments :-)
I agree with the fact that if she didn't work she shouldn't get paid but maybe she works somewhere she needs her phone and laptop.
how is this fml, seriously you're all retarded. OMG I DIDNT WORK THE LAST TWO HOURS OF MY SHIFT AND MY BOSS DIDNT PAY ME FML you didn't get paid for work you didn't do cry me a river
I think she also kind of needs the money to buy a new laptop n whatnot...so it actually is a big deal that all her stuff got stolen and then she lost some money also.
i can't think of any situation where someone would be working at some little convenience store and have a laptop with them. maybe op should have left their nice things at home
and to add, it was a personal robbery not a store robbery, so closing down was not neccesary, and not only that, but if she spent the last two hours moping around talking to the police, he doesn't have to pay her because it was a personal loss not a business loss. it's not against the law, you basically got sent home early, he doesn't hae to pay you shit, trust me, I ha e very close ties to HR and labor
@ dbag you have close ties? that's so stupid, just cause you have "close ties" to labor dosent mean you know every inch of the laws. it happened on store property plus she could have store info and financial records. wait till it happens to yall then we'll see yall whining on here too.
In the U.S., you can sue your boss if his shirt's unbuttoned. Sexual harassment. You can sue for ANYTHING here. And a shocking amount of times, you can win. I don't know what the specific circumstances were so I don't know if the boss was fair in not paying the OP or not, but assuming he wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary (I.E., forcing OP to stay after hours when she didn't want to, etc.) or otherwise promoting the chance of OP being robbed, I don't think there's any reason to actually sue the boss. That would be pretty shitty.
I have several degrees, among them are business and engineering degrees, and I also work in civil engineering, as a project manager, where at Any moment I may have to repeat or excercise one of the many laws regarding human resources, or labor regulation laws, or I may be fired or charged. so yeah, I know what I'm talking about, she didn't work she doesn't get paid, enough said. unless there was an agreement she signed when she started, her boss doesn't have to pay her shit all
ohh good thing the grammar police are watching fml! I'm not writing a technical report, nor an essay, nor a description of events, I can use whatever grammar I want, it gets the point across that I intended. just because the grammars gone, that means you can't read anymore? I see. you know you win an argument whenthe opposition starts complaining about your penmanship
Anyone saying she deserved it, or similar thoughts, should please go out and work a liquor store in some major city until they get robbed. After you're done having a weapon aimed at your face and your personal items stolen, and when you're done peeing your pants, come back and say the same. The police report is proof enough that your work environment has become dangerous. Tell your boss to install visible security cameras and to make sure no less than two people are working at any time (especially as a woman working so close to closing), or you will sue him for the wages he docked.
