Jesus Christ, 500 dollars for a freaking book? Why is education so insanely expensive in the US?
Because in the US, institutions of higher education are businesses, plain and simple, even if they are funded partly by the state. Making books cost half of a kidney is a great way to offset expenditures.

You should keep expensive and valuable items up where the dog cannot destroy them. If the dog eats books, I'm sure its destructive in other areas too. Likely, you knew it and knew better than to leave a book out.
