Assumptions

Today, I was short shifted at work because one of my employees decided not to show up. Furious, I wrote her up and made predetermined judgments about her. When she came in, I went off on her for being absent and leaving me stuck. She then informed me her mom tried to commit suicide. FML

How would you have known? IMO, not your fault.

I don't get why this is a fml. You had no way of knowing, did she even call? IDC, flame me all you want, I applaud you for what you did prior to finding out "OMFG HER MOMMY TRIED TO KILL HERSELF" Yeah that's sad, but seriously, any job I've ever worked for I WOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED FOR NOT SHOWING UP AND NOT CALLING. Jesus.

The lack of sympathy people show sometimes is really astounding. What if, OMFG, you were in the girl's situation? I doubt you would be open to getting fired, jerk.

I would find a way to let my damn job know that, oh hey, guess what? I'm at the hospital while my mom gets her stomach pumped. And hey, way to prejudge! You're just as bad as the OP. I actually DID go through a similar thing, except I found my dad unconscious from alcohol poisoning when I was 17. I called 911 and GUESS WHAT, I ACTUALLY MANAGED TO NOTIFY MY JOB THAT OHAY MY DAD NEARLY DIED I'LL BE LATE IF I MANAGE TO COME IN AT ALL!

I don't think she deserves to get fired, but she SHOULD have called, even if she would have shown up 5 minutes later.

Ihatekittens, I have been in hospitals in life-and-death situations and unless you are the doctor doing the work, there is plenty of time to make calls. Sadly, my dad didn't make it the one time and my daughter was fine the other time, but in both cases, I had opportunities to alert my employer of the situation and I did so.

I understand what you're saying here. You're not saying that she DESERVES to be fired (if I'm understanding correctly) you're saying that she SHOULD HAVE CALLED, which obviously did NOT happen if OP was writing this girl up until she WALKED INTO THE ESTABLISHMENT. In all honesty, had she not called or notified someone, I would've written her up too. After hearing her explination, I would've torn it up, but beforehand, you have no idea what's going on, you don't even have a phone call to go on. So OP, I agree with the writeup. I've never worked ANYWHERE that you didn't get written up for not calling and not showing up for work. Apparently all of you have, so please let me know where you work, because working there must be awesome.

i think it depends on when she finally came in. If it was more than a day after her scheduled shift, then you had a right to be angry. But if she showed up right after her shift or even halfway through it, you were in the wrong here. Question: did you call her home/cell phone to remind her of her shift or find out where she was?

Employers shouldn't have to do that, IMO. They should be able to expect their employees to be there on time and to know their own schedule. OP is a manager in a place of work, not a caregiver for a daycare.

This is the real world pretty sure I don't get calls to remind me of work.

if he/she wrote her up that means he/she is in a maegement position so he/she would know who she is

I thought the entertainment industry would have carved into your brain that you should never jump the gun by now. They've been doing it for centuries!

YDI for being an asshole...at least ask her why she didnt show up before flying off the handle. as for her FHL and she should have at least called.

If she finally came in more than a day after she should have, you would have a right to be mad, but not terribly angry. She could have found time to call eventually. If she came in the day of her shift, you shouldn't really be mad at all. Overall, YDI

You shouldn't be her boss. You shouldn't be anyone's boss! YDI, really you did.

You're the kind of boss that life harder on people. Don't be so fast to assume someone is slacking! And you should always take a persons history into account. I'm sure you've had to try to explain yourself to bosses like you before and it's no fun. Stop being a jerk! Karma's q bitch, and maybe you're boss will treat you the way you treat you're employees. You'd deserve it if he/she does.
