Today, I overheard my mother and sister talking so I stopped to eavesdrop. I recently enlisted in the Marines, and they were talking about what they would do with the money if I died. FML

Today, while chatting with my in-laws, I told them about my upcoming spinal surgery. Soon after, when I went to get us some drinks, I overheard them murmuring about how many surgeries I've already had, how I'm a drain on the healthcare system, and how I should ideally just die. FML

Today, I listened to a voicemail from my mom about how she misses me and can't wait to see me when I get back from vacation. Thinking she hung up, my mother then had a conversation with my aunt about how quiet the house is without me and how she'd be blessed if I didn't come home. FML

Today, at the airport, my mom began talking about how useless the war in Iraq was, and how dumb the soldiers that serve there were for enlisting during the war. The soldier at the vending machine near us caught my eye. I mouthed, "Sorry" and he mouthed, slowly, "You fuckin' better be." FML

Who hit the "you deserved that one" button? bitches. thats ****** up. even if they were joking, but everyone has their own way of dealing with people they love being enlisted in the military. As terrible as it is, youre always going to get shit from different people while youre enlisted. You just need to keep your bearing and remember what youre in it for. The conversation they were having is also fairly pointless. When i graduated from boot camp, my senior drill instructor told us that they lose more marines to car accidents and other accidents on leave and on liberty than in combat. Good luck in boot camp....tehehe

In my opinion, it sounds like they were talking about the shopping spree (YAY! D&G, plasma screens & new clothes!) they would go on if he were to die. Yeah it's normal to think about what you'd do with any inheritance (I've discussed it with my parents in the context of how they would want things to be split up between me and my three siblings) but it's not normal to be hopeful for the situation, which is how it sounds they were.

I wouldn't say you deserve it, but I also wouldn't say your life is f-ed. When you enlist to something like the marines, you're obviously taking a HUGE risk factor that can result in death. Of course, your family's gonna have to discuss something like this, and they probably will again, just with you around next time. So I guess prepare for that lil' talk. They're just preparing the worst and hoping for the best.
