sounds like something my brother would do. It sucks, but it's his money.
But, why do you care? Sure he's lying about having read these books, but does that really affect your life so negatively?
Ur brother is clever, don't fall behind ! There ill be day when you outsmart him !
Read the book. Then in front of your family engage him in a rousing discussion about the book. See him fall to pieces. My brother is great at drawing amazingly talented but I found I could write really well and he didn't like that I had a talent he didn't so he plagirizaed a book to be the "best" I pulled the book out of the book shelf and set it next to his "brilliant" work and my folks gave him shit.

Why not just ask him a question of a huge plot point? Even better, talk about it and say something wrong. If he agrees, point out you were lying and it really said something else. He's missing out on wonderful literature. Make him regret it!
Oh well OP! It will show through in his work the little knowledge he has of the book. Karma, his fault.
