I mean, this is not a great situation for you - getting lost in the woods sucks, for sure. But, like, if you know you're not that great at this sort of thing, 1. Why would you go along in the first place, unless it was expressly clear that this would be a beginner/amateur-friendly hike? And 2. Why would you let yourself stray from the group at all? If it was a case of them ditching you because you couldn't keep up, well, they suck. But in this sort of scenario, I can't imagine doing anything short of keeping at least one of them within eyesight if not arm's-length at all times to prevent just such a situation.

You could call 911, but you couldn't bring up a map and a compass? lol, YDI
How do you expect someone who never walks outdoors to know how to read a map and use a compass? Also, some people tell you they are going on a little easy hike and the next thing you know, they are climbing the Kilimandjaro at the speed of a mountain goat.
