Cough up

Today, my water got cut off. The previous homeowners owed the water company over $300, and the company doesn't believe that I'm not them. The supervisor told me this will keep happening until I pay up. I need a shower. FML

It's easy enough to prove you aren't them. Show the water company the deed to the house in your name, if you purchased it, or your signed rental/lease agreement. It will involved actually going down to the water district offices but it's better than paying a bill you don't owe.

Not sure why this was thumbed down since it was pretty good advice. There are plenty of free online places you can go to see if this is legal and what you can do about it. I'm not saying sue them since this isn't a liability issue, but you can check what you need to do to get it turned back on. In NY everyone has separate water accounts so the bill was the previous tenants problem and shouldn't be yours, not sure if that's different in other areas.

Contact the city. They can help you determine the best way of straightening this whole thing out. Bring a copy of your lease to prove when you took responsibility for the property and the bills. In the meantime, good luck! Hopefully you have some friends, a nearby gym or other resources you can use to wash.

i couldnt get my water turned on at my house cause the previous renters owed over $3000. I told the water company why do yall let them run the bill up to thousands.. dumb on their part. i had to get the landlord to call and send paper work and wait 3 days...

3 days is typical. Power is the quickest die to most power companies being privately owned. Gas and water take the longest due to typical government bureaucracy.

Don't let the water company bully you into paying! You can't be held liable for another person's debt in this situation

Can't you provide them with the recent purchase or rent paperwork?

show you rental / lease agreement and get the boss involved or the health department.

Bro go to the public pool showers or gym showers if you need one

Buy a gym membership and use their shower

Doesn't matter if this is a house or appartment it isn't your responsibility if you are the new owner.
