Cough up

By Anonymous - 18/11/2013 18:37 - United States - Fallbrook

Today, my water got cut off. The previous homeowners owed the water company over $300, and the company doesn't believe that I'm not them. The supervisor told me this will keep happening until I pay up. I need a shower. FML

It's easy enough to prove you aren't them. Show the water company the deed to the house in your name, if you purchased it, or your signed rental/lease agreement. It will involved actually going down to the water district offices but it's better than paying a bill you don't owe.

On the bright side, water is on sale at nofrills! Just go buy a couple cases and enjoy the water, you'll thank me later ;)

Time to bring some court order into the picture. Most Water or Electric companies will finally fix the problem if ya threaten to sue. All it takes is some balls to out-speak the supervisor but it can be done. Otherwise there would be a whole lot more people having to pay other peoples debts.

I was the 19000 your life sucks voter!

It is illegal for your water company, or any other utility company for that matter, to require you to pay someone else's bill in order to turn on your new service at that address. If you show proof of new lease or title transfer, they must start your service. They can send the previous owner to collections if they don't pay. Go show them your paperwork, and take a shower already. I'm sure it'd be nice to brush your teeth in the sink too. :)

Is the US really this messed up? This would not be legal over here in any way possible...

OP this is when you drive down to their offices in all your stinkyness and bring proof that you are not the previous owners and that you now own the house. I find it very difficult to believe that it's legal for them to force you to pay for someone else's bill. If, for whatever reason, you're held liable for their bill, I'd sue the previous owners for not disclosing this little factoid to you at the time of the sale. That is something you'd more than likely win. Withholding information during the sale of the house that ended up costing you money? I'd say you'd get more than your $300 back for the trouble they've caused you. It'd certainly teach them to pay their damn bills on time. Good luck OP, keep us updated, will you?

Take a copy of your paperwork with the date to them and tell them to eat it. I would be pissed. Good luck.

Go to the place and give them proof of your lease/ownership and you can even get the post office to vouch for you that you changed your address. You should also complain considering they are handling things very unprofessionally.

You can take them to court over that. That it bs. All you have to do is bring in ID and SSC or Birth Certificate.

Your supervisor is wrong. Simple solution to prove your not the previous homeowner. ID, Deeds, etc.
