To all those who are commenting that it is normal to store detergent in the garage: the fact that OP refers to it as "detergent [she] found in the garage" seems to suggest that she does not usually store detergent in the garage.... Therefore, OP deserves it for thinking "Oh here's some detergent lying about... I think I'll use it without verifying the contents... I wonder what that smell is... Smells like gas and oil... Oh well"
