Emergency!

By Not dying. - 21/04/2015 07:55 - United Kingdom - Watford

Today, I started getting really bad chest pains at work. I googled it and the internet convinced me I was having a heart attack. Scared for my life, I started to dial for an ambulance when I let out the biggest fart you could ever imagine. Turns out it was trapped gas. FML

Never use the Internet to check your symptoms. Never.

WebMD Convince yourself you have a terminal illness™

Wow I'm actually surprised the Internet was wrong on this

All these people going "don't use the Internet to look up symptoms" are either gullible idiots who can't use multiple sources and simply accept the first answer, or just parroting what other have said. If you know how to actually answer the questions, and remove irrelevant diagnoses from your list, you can get a few ideas. It's not foolproof, and you don't want to jump to conclusions based one site, but as a jumping off point for research or to ask a doctor? It's a resource.

The problem with your statement is that most people are not qualified to do exactly that. To be able to remove irrelevant diagnoses from any list, you need to have at least some basic knowledge of healthcare, which some people possess due to either education or common sense, but the majority of people simply do not have the skills to do so. There is also the problem with the internet size. There are so, so many sources on the internet. Even double-checking multiple sources can still very easily take you down the wrong path.

Did anyone else think of that Louie C.K. episode?

WebMD strikes again. Stub a toe leave with cancer

As someone that has grown up without the internet, even I know that chest pains MIGHT be a heart attack. Why you even bothered to look it up online BEFORE calling for emergency services is beyond me. Luckily it was just trapped gas, otherwise you wouldn't even make it to the 3rd 9 in 999 after faffing about online looking up symptoms. Pffffff

Would you have preferred a heart attack!? Sounds like a happy ending to me!

That's not the point. The point is, they accidentally wasted a medic's time by calling in a false alarm.

Thing is, they were right to panic. Some signs of heart attacks are chest pains, that feeling where a part of your body is "asleep" (lack of blood flow there) and frequent gas, thought I'm not too sure about the last one.

Unless there's a pain in your jaw, and a pain in your left arm, you're not having a heart attack.
