Fly my beauties

Today, my first graders released the butterflies we've been raising. The kids were sad that one had died in his cocoon and wouldn't be set free. Turns out that butterfly may have had a better fate: a flock of birds ate half of the others. Immediately after releasing them. In front of the kids. FML

So they learn about life and death...killing two birds with one stone. Or two butterflies with one bird. Take your pick.

#4/5: You are aware that there a lots of different kinds of birds, right? With different diets? There aren't really enough worms in the world to sustain the entire avian population. Plenty of birds are insectivores. And, at least the kids learned about 'the circle of life'? I would have been pretty upset if a bird ate my butterfly though :(

What better way to learn about the Circle of Life? FYL

I would have loved to see that. Even if the kids were sad, they have a great memory now. Seriously, what are the odds?

This happened to me when I was in 1st grade, my teacher released our butterflies as our shreaks of horror filled the grassy area. The ravens had swooped down and destroyed our beloved butterflies

Good, teach the little hooligans about the inevitability of life and death early. Maybe half of them wont be 'emos' in a decade.

Today, I was finally going to be released by the giants that raised me and my family. They didn't realise that I was still in my chrysalis, yet to escape. It was then that I saw a flock of air-monsters devour almost all of my entire family. Immediately after fighting for freedom. In front of some teacher who then had the audacity to complain about what it meant for her. FML # 70, thank you for illustrating how forums turn from innocent reflections on amusing tales to a brutal world of ruthless bickering about.. insects. # 79, that's heart breaking!

That happened to me in Biology class two years ago!

THAT'S HILARIOUS! I'm sorry, but even though it's kinda traumatizing to the kids just explain the food chain to them, they'll understand.

This should teach the kids an important lesson - that birds can remember which schools release a large number of butterflies on a regular basis.

Well done, numbers 26 and 28. That sucks! Those poor kids will never think of a butterfly the same way again :/
