Freakout

Today, I went to a library to return a book that I've had for years. After a heated discussion with the librarian, not only did she charge me over a hundred dollars for the book, she also called the cops to escort me out. FML

I bet the book was cheaper than the fine !?

At my library max fine is cost of book . I guess you havent been back since you stole the book. why now?

No one deserves to be abused like you were. You did the right thing by returning the book. Go back to the library and speak to this person's boss. In our library system you can't be charged fines that cost more than the book.

get a friend to go in with the book and act like they're checking it out. then you can act as if you returned it years ago. ... I know, im a terrible person

For future reference, the way out is to sneak the book back onto the shelf in its appropriate place, wait about a week, then come in and try to check out something else entirely. When they say you can't because of late fees, tell them you brought that book back already, and ask them to check for it. When they find it on the shelf, they can only assume you're telling the truth and cancel all fees.

This lad knows how to roll. Good stuff.

write a letter of complaint to the manager.

I'm 90% sure that the library can only charge you as much as the book cost.

That's why they have a night drop. In my experience, it's usually cheaper to keep the book and buy then a new one than pay the fine, not that I pay library fines anyway. Needless to say, I'm not a big public library user, although they have received a few new books out of my pocket.
