I constantly get "fines" from my library I just go in and return the books and borrow some more and they don't say anything. Usually as soon as you return it they don't care. They only might in this case because if they had to get a replacement book because yours had been gone so long then naturally they would charge you the cost of them having to get that if they paid for it if it was a donation then I doubt you would then, even so though you shouldn't be charged $100 that's a bit beyond a joke. I do find libraries do way overcharge on there fines I remember when I was just a kid I borrowed a book from the library and didn't end up returning it and I got a letter with a fine of $130 for one kids cartoon book. (I was like 12 at this time mind you). She had no right to call the cops on you though that was just over doing it.
Because libraries are doing a great service by lending out books for free. That's why the fines are there. You know about the fines so just don't return the books late. There has to be something in place to quell the flood of people that would just take books out and keep them indefinitely, and to help fund the free public service of a library. And how do you know how belligerent the OP did or didn't get or if the librarian had the "right" to call the cops on them?
There fines are beyond over priced though when they charge hundred of dollars for one book you can go to any book store and pick up for 20 and that's usually if its a new release by a well known author then. Also it's quite common for people to forget to return them by the due date. And ok yes it is her right I made a mistake there and we could argue that but since we have no idea who is more in the wrong the librarian or OP then it's pointless.
Right, that's my point too, we don't know. And I say if you can buy a new book for less, then do that, instead of borrowing it for free and complaining about the fines when you keep it too long. Libraries are still being really generous; if you know the system and don't want to pay stuff then just follow the rules.
Library? lol, What's that?
Don't mess with the librarians, they mean some serious business.
Just keep the book and buy the library some new ones. Cheaper than a hundred dollar library fine.

That must of been some book.
YDI for keeping the book for years. Sure, it's unprofessional of the librarian to get so mad at you, but what did you really expect?
Why did you have it for a year? Took you that long to read it? Must've been a book about women.

Well you kinda deserve it for having the book for so long...
At least you did the right thing in returning the book.
