Gambit

Today, after a couple days of taking lessons after I decided to learn to play Chess as a hobby, I felt a bit better about my skill level than I was before. Then I got absolutely humbled by five different people. One of them actually said to me, "What Glass Joe is to Punch-Out, you are to chess." It's hard to not be discouraged after that. FML

True. I’m good enough at chess without book moves, but I wasn’t always that way, and truth be told, i’ve been used to mop the floor several times by others that are better. I play for fun, enjoy the mental mechanics and thought into it, but to get better takes a while. Pretty sure I’m rusty, but other than some very simple known ways to win, I probably suck to those who invest a lot of time into it. Try playing online. It’s a good way to get better.

chess takes years to master for most people..it's not a hobby you just pick up overnight

Chess is super-frustrating when you try out new things at first because of its extreme reliance on "book moves" that have been calculated, tried out and tested millions of times. Keep trying, you have to familiarize yourself with a new playstyle or moves dozens of times before you will be successful with them.

You were never going to start off as the best, play for fun until you really start to get good.

how could you believe that a couple of days would be enough to master such a difficult game??
