Ok seriously why is everyone being so ignorant about everything. First of all in Britain we have the British sterling pounds, not euros. Secondly, when we talk about gas we do not mean the stuff you put in cars, we call that 'petrol'. Surely that is evident. We mean the sort of gas you might use to heat your oven if you have a gas oven, or the type you would use to boil water in a pan. Even if the oven in your house works electrically surely you would know of other people who have a gas cooker.
Yeah, I live in Canada and I have a gas bill. The Americans don't understand that you put petrol in the tank, which is near the boot. "Gas" refers to propane that you use if you have a gas stove.

"The Americans"? Um, I'm American and grew up with a house that used gas for heat, hot water, and had a gas stove. I'm well aware of what gas is used for when referring to utilities. Not all Americans are as ignorant as the morons who don't know the difference between gas you put in a car and what you use at home.
Okay, sorry. It is unfortunate that there are morons that give other Americans, such as yourself, a bad name, But I guess every country has their George W. Bush.

How very, very true! I recently met with another girl from Great Britain and when I started talking to I learned she already thought I was stupid because I'm an American. It's pretty annoying since my school has been getting quite a few new students from different countries. The worst of it? They all seem to think the same thing; Americans are stupid. I'm really getting sick of it all...

Okay, I get that gas is regularly used in houses in the UK, but I still don't get the "Lotsa love" part.. it doesn't seem professional for a company to say.

i don't buy it, your gas would already have been shut off by now if that was the case. and i am completely flabbergasted by these people who don't understand what a gas bill is.

The OP said, "Which ran something along the lines of", which means he re-wrote it to make it sound more humorous. So it wasn't a scam. His gas company didn't really say "lotsa love". It was a joke.
I think that it's a fake letter, given the fact that they would have shut off your gas by now.
