By Anonymous - This FML is from back in 2009 but it's good stuff - United Kingdom

Today, I found a letter in the postbox at my new flat which ran something along these lines of: "Hi. We're the gas company. You owe us £1,229.79 and have 7 days to pay us. Lotsa love, dated 7th September." FML

Call the company to confirm its legit and NOT a scam. Then if real set up a paument agreement. Good Luck Cause WOW are times hard all over!!!

Your gas company says "Lotsa love?" Mine offers me blumpkins.

See, plexico can pull off misreading without freaking out the FML staff. You continue to amaze me, every time.

This is why women shouldn't fart. £1000+? For passing gas? Cap and trade must be pretty bad over there, they charge you for methane emissions? Seriously though, why would you owe the gas company money? Don't you just fill up, pay and go? Sorry if I'm being ignorant, I didn't know gas companies billed you in the UK. What kind of professionals end letters with "Lotsa love"?

Haha wow. Is that second paragraph a joke, too?

Okay, sorry. I'm not really awake. I didn't know the UK ran electricity and stuff on gas. I guess I'm just too lazy to look it up, thanks.

people here generally don't have gas anything in apartments.. some houses have propane, but a lot of them these days tend to be fully electric

I know what gas stoves and heating is, but i wasnt thinking about utilities for some reason. I dont worry about bills and stuff since I'm only 15 and we live in a pretty new neighborhood.

That figures why you don't know sh*t about gas, other than "gasoline" and "passing gas."

well... who cares? it's not your account, you weren't living there, it's not your responsibility, nor your bill, so what's the big deal? if someone living in the apartment before you doesn't pay their electric, phone, internet- etc. bill, that doesn't carry over to you, if it did, nobody would ever move into a new place so, in short, YDI for being too dumb to realize that the previous tenants are the ones with the FML, not you.

My new electric company didn't start when I asked them to and the previous tenants company continued to supply me without my knowledge and at huge prices. I found out after a month in the new place and yes I had to pay it even though my name was not on the account. They threatened legal action if I didn't and to get my details from the landlord. It sucked but OP might have to pay this.

call the company and see if its a scam, also explain to them that you have just moved in and arent responsible for the gas usage of another tenant, go to your landlord and explain the situation, maybe thatll help?

People are idiots. It's obvious it's a fake letter, some new scheme or something. Do the math, my house is average size, 3 bed, 2 bath, and my average gas bill is $20-30. Even rounding up and fees, it shouldn't be more than $600 a year. You know of ANY company that would let you slide for 4 years without payment? 2 years? 6 months?

you know what? touche flaminyawn. i also have a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house and the gas bill is never more than $40..and theres always at least five people in the house. if it was a flat, i couldnt imagine a tenant using more than $20 on gas a month. that bill translates to $1949.13, that would be over ninetyseven months of $20 gas bills, this is pretty implausible as the gas company will shut your service after only a few months of not paying the bill.

Wow, nice to live in a place where they do not charge you that much for your gas rates in your home, or to have a home where not much works off of gas. However there are other places and homes where gas usage fees and costs are MUCH higher and more things in their house use gas and their gas bill is definately more than $20 a month. I live in a 4 bedroom 3 bath house. Have a furnace and water heater that uses gas...with all the fees and the rates the bill comes to over $100 a month, that is in the summer!! My parents live on a farm, same usage, they pay a couple hundred dollars a month. Think about how usage differs in different places and how each city or country sets their rates and fees up differently...oh and taxes too.

I'd love to live where electricity is so cheap. Even in Darwin where we had solar power the bills were still $1000+ each quarter.

Well, the Euro to Dollar conversion isn't that big a difference, and I'm assuming gas isn't that much more expensive than in America. Where I live, this gas bill would never exist in an average house, much less a flat.

You seem to be confusing countries here.

umm.. the euro dollar difference isn't that big? its about 1.6 dollars to a euro.. and i think you meany pound.. which is almost 2 dollars to a pound.

I don't understand all the American comments that seemed to be confused by having gas in your house. Even when I lived in a region where no one I knew had gas appliances I was well aware of gas appliances. Then when I lived in a major metro area EVERYONE had something run on gas. Even my apartment had a gas stove. And now in the 'burbs most people have something gas run also, we have a gas water heater. Even if you live in a region where people don't really have gas, you still hear about it, terms like "pilot lights" are mentioned, and you see gas stoves and stuff on TV. Surely the idea of a gas appliance isn't that foreign to you. And also, this obviously isn't an FML, because it's pretty obvious it was either for the tenant before you, or a scam.
