Today, I started a sport journalism degree. I was the only woman out of 60 students. The lecturer started talking about how we should all aspire to become sports editors of national newspapers. Later, he said women have no chance of ever becoming sports editors. FML

Well thats downright offensive. Tell him that he has no chance of getting laid with that attitude. Ever.

That's when u bust your ass, become the editor and then tell him to suck it

That will never happen, 83. First the OP needs to graduate, which will take a couple of years. Then the OP needs to get an actual job at a newspaper. Since they aren't hiring, her career will die right there. She'll end up working PR for someone. PR is a graveyard for journalism majors.

Don't get down on the dumps because of some one track minded douche! :)

He clearly doesn't know what the **** he's talking about.

He's talking? Funny cause he's probably teaching the subject because he didn't get the job as a sports editor. He obviously did something wrong in his life.

Actually, a majority journalism professors DO have experience in the field. A lot of them are either retired from papers or teach part time because their full time job is at a paper.

Since newspapers are not hiring and haven't been doing so in years, the OP should be more worried about getting a job as a sportswriter, period, much less becoming and editor. My husband IS the sports editor at a major metro paper and he is flooded with resumes from aspiring sports writers. He hasn't had so much as a clerical position to fill in years. If he were to ever have an opening the number of people with experience who were laid off from other papers who would beg him for the spot would render considering inexperiened people unnecessary. College keep cranking out journalism majors and there are absolutely no jobs for them.

Unfortunately, women rarely "have a place" anywhere men decide they want to be. The point is that you have to make you place. Good luck! We'll be rooting for you.

You should have pointed out the fact that he is an instructor and not an editor of a national newspaper, so if you're using his logic, that makes him a woman. What an asshole comment on his part, though. Hopefully you don't take it to heart, OP! Work hard and you will achieve your goals.

Newspapers?!?!? How cute! Tell him you'd like to take a daguerreotype with him and send it to your parents on the Pony Express. Newspapers.

Never mind the blatant, awful sexism, but there isn't even a place for women sports journalists in women's sports? They're not confined to that, but it's something for even sexist professors to think about.

Women's sports don't sell so there are few jobs covering them and they don't pay shit. Most women who want to do sports journalism aren't doing it because they want to be sports journalists. They're doing it because pro athletes make a fortune and they want to marry a millionaire. By becoming a sports journalist they think they will have their pick of rich guys and will meet them on a professional level so they won't appear to be a groupie. In reality, most of them will never even get near a pro beat; they'll end up working the night shift at a daily local taking high school results and doing the local highlights roundup, if they can even get that these days. I just did a job with a recent Ivy League grad who was the top of his class and all he can get is freelance and he's REALLY GOOD. The average schmucks from the state schools have no chance if this guy can't get anything. It isn't a matter of being good or working hard. THERE ARE NO ******* JOBS.

Bullshit there aren't. I've seen several friends get decent jobs this year with very little in the way of qualifications, and most of them got those jobs on their first try. Bankrupt, you must be one very unhappy creature, because nothing that I've seen you post is anything other than bitter whining and shitty attempts to bring the OP down. And LOL at your trolling, saying all these girls just get into it to be gold-diggers. What a ****** up excuse of a human being you are. Get a life, yeah?

I would guarantee that my expertise in newspapers is far, far, FAR superior to yours so as a matter of fact, I DO know exactly what I am talking about. Did your friends get newspaper jobs? That is the specific career under discussion. I am stating facts. Colleges are pumping 'J' majors out in record numbers and over 90% of them have NO HOPE of ever setting foot in a real newsroom. As reporters and editors leave or retire they are not being replaced so the usual 'old people out, new people in' way of life doesn't apply in a newsroom. They simply divide the work up among the remaining people and slog along as best they can. If newspapers are not hiring, newspapers are going out of business and newspapers are downsizing, exactly where are the newspaper jobs? Answer: THERE AREN'T ANY. Trust me, I know this. If you are a journalism major, switch or accept that you are wasting your time and money. You heard it here first.

And to address your 'gold digging' comment, that is the God's honest truth. These women ARE GOLD DIGGERS. My husband gets their freaking resumes all the time and we all laugh our asses off at them. Back in the days when he actually interviewed (because he actually had jobs to fill) he interviewed a million of these chicks and they all did the same thing; left in a huff when they found out they couldn't get a pro beat with no experience. Reporters work and wait for YEARS to get these plum assignments and these jack nuts think they can waltz in and get one. Exactly what was my husband supposed to do with the guys who already had those beats? Tell them, "Sorry, Tom, Dick or Harry, you need to step aside for some woman with no experience, connections or any real expertise because she doesn't think she should have to start at the bottom the way you did. But don't worry, you'll get the job back in a few years when she marries Derek Jeter."

Sounds like you were brought up to believe women are deceitful creatures and evil and all that Carrie-style shit, and now you assume the absolute worst about every other woman. Hell, weren't you bragging about how you supposedly sadistically bully women who have the balls to breast-feed in public, on a recent FML? You've got serious issues, lady. I feel sorry for you, but wouldn't believe a thing that comes out of your mouth on subjects like this.

I'll say it again. This is one area where I will guarantee that I have WAY MORE EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE than literally anyone else on this site, and I am telling you that this is how it is. You can believe it or you can not, but this is how it is. And FYI, pro athletes laugh at those women, too. I'd tell you how I know this but you wouldn't believe me.

#107 Just because you "Know" more about journalism than the average joe, doesn't give you the right to be an asshole. Sure, you are realistic, I give you that, but at the cost of being an insensitive dick. So what if there aren't job opportunities. You have absolutely no right to squash anyones dreams. They have to do that on their own. Besides, one thing about Humans is we have strong will. Human will is the strongest force ever created. There are those born to succeed and those determined to succeed. The former fall into it, and the latter pursue it at all costs. They won't be denied. Nothing daunts them. So if she has enough will power, she can do anything she wants to do.

While #107 maybe could have been slightly less cynical in their comments, I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with what they are saying. I don't think they are trying to squash anyone's dreams just to be mean. I'll agree, human will is a powerful force, and it's a nice idea. But eventually reality kicks in (note that I say this in general, having little experience with journalism specifically). No reason OP can't be a sports editor as a female, or in general. But if the field is the way 107 describes it, it might be difficult. Sometimes people have the will to work that hard and wait a long time to achieve their ultimate dream, even if that means working part-time or outside the field for a while and/or making very little money. Some people might not. I studied Latin in undergrad. I knew what I was getting into from the start, and I eventually admitted to myself that I was not strong enough to force my way into a Latin professorship given the state of the field, and I went in another direction. I know a lot of people who studied Latin and were assured by their professors that they could follow their dreams or whatever to get a job in the field if they had the "will" to achieve it. Most of them are jobless are underemployed, 2+ years out. They could have used someone with 107's frank honesty. OP may be up for achieving that sports editor job anyway, but I think sometimes you just need people to tell it like it is, even if it's a little pessimistic or unpleasant to hear.
