I for one, also look away as I don't like to keep eye contact all the time. makes me feel nervous, so I like to look next to the person instead. And yes I am a manager.
My high school teacher taught me this trick. Look at the person's forehead instead of their eyes. It should help you feel less nervous, while the other person is none the wiser!

Hey, you never know...maybe they had personal stuff going on. Im a firm believer in seperating your personal life from your work life but sometimes thats easier said than done. Ive had interviews I thought were a complete failure and in the end I still got hired. Good luck to you OP :)

I had this happen to me once and got the job, people often have things on their mind I wouldn't count yourself out yet!
He was probably so interested in you that his mind could not handle the extreme exposure and had to dart off to avoid overheating.
