I think the OP is putting this into the wrong context. Maybe he did mourn his mother but never told you or mourned her around you. And honestly most men have cars as the thing they love the most, if you can't accept that then you don't deserve him. Everyone has something and I'm pretty sure whatever it is you have you'd be just as upset.
Allow me to shed a little light on the cost of some paint jobs.. I have a three layer pearlescent white that came from factory. It's a toyota color code, and a quart of each of the three layers I need is over $200 Now imagine paying someone for a couple quarts, and about 8 hours worth of time spraying the car then a couple hours baking the paint on.. You're talking at the absolute least a thousand dollars for an original equipment respray.. Now If you wanted it done right, multiple colors or a pearlescent other than white, you're talking several thousand dollars for paint.. And fixing a scratch on a $6,000 paint job isn't exactly cheap either.... If someone keyed my car I'd be ready to beat them down with something..
I'm a girl and I feel his pain. I Also happen to love my car a lot more than my psycho-**** of a "mother". OPs boyfriend needs a better girlfriend.
Maybe he should stop being such an arsehole and people wouldn't keep keying his car
I'd be the same way too if I just paid a lot of money to have my car painted and then it get keyed. This is a YDI for you. You'd probably would be that way too.
unless your a car person you wouldn't understand. I own a Corvette and its my world I inspect it every time I get near it. Non car people just don't get it! Who the hell are you to determined if his grief is over reacting.
If he's more upset about his car's paint job getting damaged than he was about his MOTHER DYING, then yes, he is overreacting.
Its so expensive to paint a car. I would cry too

You don't **** with a man's car... Because I'm sure it wasn't cheap.
It's amazing what people put at the top of their priority lists when it comes to reacting...
