He studied the blade

Today, it was my dad's retirement. He is traditional Japanese, so I had custom-ordered a samurai sword from a traditional Japanese blacksmith with dad's name engraved on the blade in kanji script. He loved it, right up til my drunk cousin tried to use it to cut down a tree and snapped it in two. FML

Maybe you should swing the cousin at a tree and see if he breaks..? Seriously though, make him repay you, and then some.

sounds like your cousin needs a sword to the face. sorry OP :( at least your dad loved his gift

Katanas are much more delicate than people realize, and more expensive especially how that was forged. I hope he pays for a replacement!

i am a bladesmith, and let me tell you, no real samurai sword would snap. it is almost impossible short of dropping boulders on it. if it snapped while hitting wood then it was junk when it was new.

You're definitely not a blacksmith if you think a katana can't break when being swung at a tree.

Dang, your cousin must have swung it really hard for it to brake. As far as i know well made katanas are very hard to brake. Would kill to get my hands on one of those handcrafted beauties...

He's sounds like a crap blacksmith if it breaks that easily.

Yeah, Katanas are not very sturdy. They are traditionally made out of inferior alloys as thats all Japan had access to. They are amazingly sharp and slice through human flesh like nothing but if they hit something hard to many times or in the wrong way they are done. Ever wonder why a sword breaking is part of pretty much every samurai story?

I'd b picking up the broken pieces and shoving them somewhere that will cause per many damage
