If your dog had attacked the robber, or anyone for that matter, there is no doubt he would have to be put to sleep. As unfortunate as it is that your phone was stolen, you would have felt a lot worse if your dog had to be taken away from you. Phones can be replaced, loved ones cannot.
It's sad how true this is. your dog defends you, even saves your life, but they can be murdered for it.maybe if you weren't mugging people, you wouldn't get bit!!
Your dog probably didn't think you were very threatened. If you didn't scream enough or seem like you were in pain it might have not known you were in real danger.
I would like to know how you reacted in the situation. Did you yell a lot in fear as he jumped you or were you quiet and submissive? Did you allow him to take the belongings without fighting back and making much fuss? (which is how one should react anyway because you never know if a robber has a weapon). Dogs usually defend their owners when they hear a lot of defensive yelling and identify fear in the voice of their owner, otherwise he may just not have known you were in any danger.
You should have raised him to attack on command and stop on command. I trained my cat to do that. It took a lot of time.
OP, if your dog is able to jump your fence, you really need to get that fixed. What if he attacks, bites a passerby? I doubt you'd want to have to put him down, have to register him as a dangerous dog and/or have to get liability insurance because he was able to get loose that one time. Be a better dog owner for his sake.
Why would OP get sued just because his dog chased someone? Unless the dog bit the mailman, there is no reason to sue.
Perhaps you should enrol you and your dog in protection classes? :)
Am I the only one who thinks 175lbs is a bit exaggerated? My best friends bull mastiff is only 140lbs and is a much larger dog than a Rottweiler. But that's just me
He could be over weight? You never know.
Maybe OP is killing his dog with kindness... (Over feeding)
I have a 150lb German blockhead rotty. He's not over or under weight. He was just bred to be massive. My boyfriend says Zeus' dad was scary as shit to see because he was so huge, but Zeus won't get as big.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
we used to have a pink papered rottweiler that was over 180 pounds all muscle. He was that big because of his purebred line and just how he was raised so its not inconceivable for them to be that large
Op, if you live in a bad area or this is just by bad luck. I suggest u get urself a nice .380 or .9mm handgun to carry on ur side. You live in america. Use ur rights b4 obama takes them away
I never trained my dog to protect me, he did it on his own, even against people he'd known forever. Any little thing that made me squeak and he was on it. Dogs are like people though in that they each have their own personalities and thoughts. Sorry yours wasn't quite lined up the way you wanted it to be OP!
I have a German Shepard (I have 5 dogs total) and we never taught her to guard but when my grandma was pet sitting she was charged by a Rottweiler, and our GS held the Rottweiler down by the neck until my grandma was a distance away.
Oops I meant 4
My Dad's Saint Bernard single-handedly fought off three of my neighbor's Pitbulls that had gotten through the fence into his backyard and were attacking my Dad. And by "fought off," I mean "Beat the shit out of." And this was a dog that has never growled at anything in his life. He doesn't even mind cats.

Everyone knows the mailman is the dogs arch-nemesis
You can't rely on your dog to protect you, when it comes down to it, they're probably just as scared and confused as you are in that situation, no matter how big and scary they look!
