No one is simply entitled to a raise. You earn a raise. You need to promote why you deserve one and not use a technicality as your strategy. You should treat a raise talk with your boss the same as an interview. Present yourself, your qualifications and what you've done since being on board. Your boss needs to see and feel that you are valuable and worth keeping. When you do that, your boss will know that a raise will keep you happy and under his employ.
What a dick
Where do people find these freaking bosses? Sorry about that, OP!
At work, next question.
I feel the need to point out that what you did wasn't actually asking for a raise. You demanded a raise because if he fired you he'd have to pay someone more anyway. Humility is a good thing sometimes.
Especially in a slave labour - oops, sorry, I mean "right to work" state.
I agree with the boss. Anyone that approached me in that manner asking for a raise would get a cold shoulder quickly. Or even better when I am alloted say $4 amongst 4 people. The other 3 might enjoy say 1.25 each and the individual who acted unprofessionally would only get .25. There by I met your demand for a raise. If everyone's a team player on my team. I tend to forget each person individual faults since we all make mistakes and treat them equal at that point.
Better work hard to keep it
That wasn't a polite way to ask for a raise YDI.
OP - if you're a female I would definitely complain to corporate and get his ass fired. That comment can be taken as sexist.
Well considering OP Boss said "knows his place" i doubt they are female.
It's a man. But even if it DID happen to a woman that doesn't count as sexist. OP is the one at fault here.
If someone came to me with that sort of attitude and pointed out that scale for a new hire was more than what they were getting, I'd tell them if they didn't like it then quit and reapply and see if they get the job. A hint, they probably won't. OP, if you want a raise, ask for it on the merits. Do a good job, stand out from the other employees in a /good/ way.
My bad. That was meant as a standalone post.
I feel like people that ask for raises are greedy and should just be thankful what they already have. You deserve it OP for being a ****
Ah, America! The land of equality, where the cops think they are Judge Dredd, and the bosses think that their staff are on the chain gang.

Well putting it that way probably wasn't the best plan. Maybe you should've highlighted your worth to the company rather than whatever the hell you said.
Why would you point out that he'd have to pay more anyway if he hired someone else? You're pretty much arrogantly demanding for a raise because that's his only option anyway, not asking. Next time you ask for a raise, back it up by pointing out how your previous and current contributions to the company have made you a valuable asset to the company.
