Maybe you should also be looking for that job in Japan because your manager sounds like a total idiot
sounds like it's time to go apply where your old coworker is working and tell your manager to go **** off
OP, all you can do is to communicate what you boss told you to say. It’s not up to you or your boss if former coworker comes back or not. Don’t expect boss to be happy about this, but they cannot fire you over something that is beyond your control. Or if they do, they are a complete idiot… Bear in mind the circumstances - Former coworker may or may not be telling you the truth about how much their job pays or the job perks they get. They probably want to rub it in that there is no way they are coming back to work for someone stupid enough to fire them and then wants them back… OP, you might want to start looking for a new job on your terms and your timing. Don’t quit until you find one and get the offer officially, though. Any boss dumb enough to do this is dumb enough to cause lots of other problems.
Promise him 5 times his old salary and 2 cars and 2 houses. Let your boss deal with that win.
Plus, he's in Japan, which is a superior country. :D
