Regardless of what the cashier had assumed, it was wrong of him/her to make OP feel uncomfortable. As a Newsagent cashier, when customers buy nudie magazines I don't bat an eyelid and simple ask "Would you like a bag with that, sir?" If you make your customers feel comfortable, they are more likely to come back. OP probably won't go back to that store now because the cashier made her feel awkward. Essentially, I believe that when working in retail you have a duty to make your customers happy and comfortable buying from you. Otherwise you shouldn't be in customer service.
