One more reason to quit

Today, I handed in my resignation letter after over three and a half years working at the company. My manager is angry with me, since we returned from an overseas business trip yesterday, and why didn't I inform her before the trip. She now wants me to pay all costs of trip before leaving the job. Just refuse. What are they going to do, fire you?

Do not! And keep an eye on your paystubs! If she even tried to deduct it, go straight to the labor board. You were doing your job!

on one hand you should have waited a week and that's why YDI but on the other hand your boss cannot force you to pay for that trip so that will be a Your life sucks

tell her you can't afford it because you don't have a job.

They should charge you. If you knew you were going to resign then you should have let some else go that would benefit the company from the BUSINESS trip.

the company did benefit from the business trip by having a person with 3 years experience representing them in a professional manner and completing the work in a timely manner. quitting after the trip was much more responsible than quitting before. it was a business trip and the person did their job on said trip. leaving before would have left the company scrambling to get another person booked and informed of the responsibilities on extremely short notice. this was not a vacation, it was work. the manager is just being petty and childish.

And whose to say that if OP gave their notice before the trip, their boss wouldn't have done the same thing and insisted they pay for the trip?

whose to say this business trip wasn't more about training, or even cementing relationships with providers. That would be a waste and probably a benefit if her next job is the competition

Where's the FML? I assume you just laughed at her and walked off.

The nature of the business trip makes a big difference here. If it was training you received or if you were helping build a relationship with a new client, then I definitely side with your boss. Your departure immediately following would negatively impact the company's relationship with that client or the company would not be seeing a return on their investment in you. However, if you were just running a booth at a tradeshow or teaching a training class, or something where it doesn't matter that you are you, then she has nothing to complain about. That you worked for the company 3 and a half years is irrelevant. I assume you got paid the past 3 and a half years at a rate you agreed to. The company doesn't owe you any additional.

The best response. You've earned your name.

She can want in one hand and sh!t in the other. Tell her to let you know which fills up faster.

WTF STFU 3

Oh and like all companies they let you know before they fire you right? Tell her it is business and you just got the offer after the trip and as far as paying for it you did not sign anything stating that you have to repay for the trip which she writes off anyway. She is just being pissy and GROW THE HELL UP.

Hi guys! OP here. Thanks for the support and comments. I talked with my general manager and he acted way more understanding and tried to find a comman way. We agreed that since the business trip was not beneficial for the both parties (it was just a company meeting with other branches), the company decided not to charge me with any expenses and let me go.
