Wow some of the comments are just plain heartless. Give the guy a break. Plausible reasons... 1. Wasn't ready to say it back 2. Was trying to be playful 3. Freaked out and said the first thing that popped into his head. BTW, my partner and I both agree it's a perfectly acceptable reply. (Took him over a year to be able to tell me he loved me, but his actions always told me he did.)
