Maybe he was referencing the Barney show? Dinosaurs on that show love everybody, so maybe he was saying I love you, too?

This sounds like something my boyfriend would say. Often times, I'll say something like "You're wonderful!" only for him to respond something like "I am a taco!" I'm not offended though because he tells me he loves me all the time. If it was OPs first time saying that... ouch. Maybe he just wasn't ready to say the big L word.
