Promotion, huh?

Today, I was promoted. After going to school for 10 months to get certified for the new position, training extensively, and taking on a ton more responsibility, I was hoping for a decent raise. How much do my bosses think all of that time and effort is worth? One dollar more per hour than I made before. FML

$1 an hour raise may not seem like much, but that is an extra $2000 a year assuming you work 40 hour weeks.

"Oh, wow, you went to janitorial school and have tasked yourself with spending an extra four hours each day waxing the floors. That's… you're one hell of an accountant!"

we really need to know what the percentage was do you get annual raises and what are those in a percentage sometimes the corporate mindset is to give you a small raise so there is room to give you increases later do you have any idea what other people with the same certifications make

Certification, degrees, mean little until you prove what you can do with them. Show them that you can actually do what you trained for, and then tell them you think you're worth more.

Time to find a different employer. The easiest way to get a decent raise is to go somewhere else.

I'd be more than happy with a dollar an hour raise. But then again that's like a 6% raise for me

I got certified after 10 years in my trade, got CPR certified, and underground competency certification. I got an $8 raise (50%). my boss refused to give me even a $2 raise without those. I've got co workers who make more then I do with no certifications, and co workers making more then I used to with less then half the experience. difference numbers, same level of unfairness. life keeps moving forward.

If you're not satisfied, ask for more or at least try and figure out why or how they scale raises. I was at a position once where I was running a crew of 4 people but someone else had the title I should have had. Another company picked me up a year later and was willing to more than pay me for my experience, as well as sending me to college to get different certifications.

Yeah promotions are shit. Don't be duped.

So prove yourself for a few months, then go back and ask for more. It's probably what they're expecting.

That is a $2000 a year raise. Likely you were at the top of the old jobs pay scale, now you are at the bottom of the new ones. The certification just opens the door to earning more, you still have to get the experience in your new position to justify further increases in pay. If they don't reward you after a year, look elsewhere.
