I'm sorry but this just reminds me of the episode of Friends where Joey "broke" the happiest dog in the world with his depression.
A client at the vet clinic I used to work at had depression and a weight problem. Whenever she would have a low point and gain weight, her two dachshunds would gain weight with her. The Vet I worked with had them on a very controlled diet and had them come in every 2 weeks for weight checks, and she'd talk to the owner and try to gently motivate her and keep her spirits up. Yet another reason that I like Vets better than human doctors. (Disclaimer: I have had the great fortune of working with 6 AMAZING Vets, and yes I am aware some Vets are terrible people/doctors. I've worked with them too!)

I'm sorry OP. Maybe if you take him to a dog park he'll connect with some other dogs and cheer up - who knows, you might even connect with someone else yourself!
