So long, grandpa

Today, I took home my grandpa's ashes. I then went out with my grandma, leaving my 5-year-old at home with my 12-year-old. When I got home, my beaming 5-year-old opened the door, covered in white powder. My grandmother asked where all the powder had come from. She pointed to the empty ashbox. FML

Common sense should have been used here: Keep out of reach of children.

That is so awful. Why the hell did you leave something that important where your five-year-old could get at it?? Why was she not informed that this was an absolutely hands-off item? Why was she beaming? There is so much wrong with this. Your poor, poor grandmother. :(

I'm pretty sure that they make those containers with ashes really, really hard to open, you know...in case they get dropped or whatever. How in the hell did a 5 year old even get it open?

Uh...not really. My grandma was cremated and the box is not sealed. Urns are not sealed, they have lids, but you can CHOOSE to have them sealed. And no. Cremated ashes are white, but can also be other colors depending on certain factors. Humans aren't cigarettes, sweetheart. The ashes are different.

Sorry "sweetheart", but ashes are, in fact, shades of gray and/or brown and/or black...the color is solely dependant upon the heat in the crematorium and the type/amount of fuel used. Yes, light gray can look like white, and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you are talking about light gray, but it's not like they bleach the bones or ashes....you never get true white. And you were wrong, and yet still so condescending, about another thing. Ashes always, without exception, come home sealed (did you really think crematoriums didn't have governmental/national regulations?). Regardless of the fact that we call them "ashes", they are still human remains. Once you get them home, you may do with them as you please, but until then, they are in a sealed plastic bag inside of either a plastic box or a cardboard box, or a velvet bag. The plastic bag always has some sort of identification card or number so that you know you got your loved one back. No, the tops on the plastic or cardboard outside boxes aren't always "sealed" on the bottom of the box, but the remains inside are sealed. ps -- thanks so much for pointing out that we aren't cigarettes. I was worried there for a minute.

Fake.. one.. those boxes are SEALED.. meaning you CANNOT get in them. two, ashes are not white, they are a dark dark gray. FML always posts the stupid ones.

#33, If you are 12 you aren't allowed to be using this site. A responsible 12 year old would know that, and would not be visiting here. 12 year olds responsible to babysit also would be too mature to put a nearly pornagraphic picture as their avatar

really just an unfortunate accident, the kids obviously didnt know any better, you should have put it in a safer place ...

That is discusting. But really, YDI. Why would you leave a 5 year old with a 12 year old? And, you should have put it in a better area.

Why the hell would you leave a 12 year old home alone with a younger child? You deserve not just this but, if your religious preferences swing that way, the haunting of that unsettled spirit til the end of your days.

Put it where the kids can't reach it, moron.
