@9 Except engagement rings weren't invented to "sell diamonds." Back in the old days the man had to produce one of these for the father of the bride, it was proof that he would be able to support her when they were married. The left ring finger is used because they also believed that there was a vein there that went directly to the heart. Just to clear that up I agree that OP is making too much of a deal about the ring, if moneys that important to her find someone else
