Today, a great job I have been wanting to apply for opened for applications. Turns out it requires a clean background with no credit issues. I recently got a notice saying my wife and I are being sued over an unpaid $140 medical bill that she neglected to pay. FML

If you pay it post-haste and talk to the parties involved, they may simply drop the suit without it getting into your check.

FYL OP, She's ruining both your credit. :/

Usually these requirements are just to make sure you can not be blackmailed and a small bill like this is not something anyone can blackmail you over, contact the other party over the bill pay it and apply for your job despite this FML showing you would break under blackmailing..

I've never heard of a job giving a **** about your credit rating. Is that legal? If it is a regular thing that happens, why? Not trying to be an ass, I'm legitimately confused.

yeah, definitely apply. i don't know if this is true, but i've heard that medical debts don't hit your credit report.

iv never heard of getting sued over a medical bill

You can be sued for any unpaid bill, as long as they have the paperwork.

I have never heard of getting sued over a medical bill THAT small. That's ridiculous !

I've heard of bills going to collections, but never being sued for it.

Considering that it is nigh impossible to have "perfect" credit- as in no issues at all, ever- I think the company just means above average credit. If it's that major of a concern, call to pay the bill and explain that the notice was the first you received and the lack of an earlier written or vocal request for payment caused you both to assume that the bill had been covered in full by your insurance. You can also ask if they would be willing to negotiate to remove the bill from your credit report via a "goodwill adjustment." You could use the rest of your credit history (which sounds like it was nearly perfect prior to your wife's mistake) as evidence to support your request for a goodwill adjustment, as it would who that you do not have a history of being late on payments or refusing to make payments. If you and your wife frequently go to the medical center that the bill is from, you can use your patronage there as further support. Hope something I said helps OP-you even see this comment, that is- and good luck on the job.

How is it neigh impossible to have perfect credit?

pay it ASAP and you might be ok. Speak to them and apologize for overlooking it.

Pretty sure something better will be waiting for you soon enough.

Paying the bills should be a joint responsibility in a marriage. If you don't participate, then don't complain if something gets missed.

There's nothing in the fml that says the op refused to even look at a bill and left everything to his poor beleaguered wife which is what you seem to have interpreted it as saying? The wife could have deliberately hidden the bill from him or told him she's paid it or genuinely forgotten to pay - we can't tell from the info in the fml.

it could even be an error in reporting as well. if the wife did pay the bill but it was slightly after being sent to collections, they'll sometimes report it before the payment arrives

Admittedly, we are both making a lot of assumptions, since there isn't much detail in the FML.
