Today, a white guy tried to teach me to use chopsticks properly. I'm Chinese and have been using them since I could eat. FML

Poke his eyeball with it and tell him you know how to use them just fine.

I can't hold a knife and fork right... I'm 16 and a white australian

So a white guy made no assumptions based on race and treated you exactly as he would anyone else... and you had a problem with that?

ghadir 2

wow that was beautifully put if i do say so myself :)

he should've also suggested tutoring you in math, just to be even less racist

I'm with # 14--I see nothing in this situation that is a FML except the man's choice of dinner companion-HE deserves the FmL, not the OP.

maybe you could live with the fact that OP was over reacting, and that someone was just trying to help. "oh no thank you, I'm good." "ok. see ya!" so hard

This is a perfect example of "Things White People Do..." at blogspot. You guys really have no idea when you do subtly racist things. Regardless of how it appears to you, POC get insulted and demeaned by these sort of situations. Imagine how embarrased she felt while he was doing it in front of others at the resteraunt. Don't you think she wanted to snatch the chpsticks out of his hands and berate him for what he did? His actons were a mixture of babying her and trying to appear that he, as a white person, knew more about her heriage than she did. Thats not cool. love, a POC

this comment really bugs me for some reason. It's not just white people that do subtly racist things without realizing or meaning too (and its not so much racist things, as it it patronizing things). All people do it every so often, no matter what "race" you are (and this whole asian, white, black, brown thing is stupid to, whats the definition of an asian, if you are black, grow up in asia, and your parents grew up in asia, or perhaps you were adopted by asian adults, so you know the culture better than most asian people that grew up in North America or anyhwere else outside asia, does the fact that your ancestry way way back is African, make you not asian even though thats the culture you know and live?)

you do realize that what he did was the opposite of racism, right? he made no racial assumption and treated the OP like he would everybody else. and I hate the term POC, and political correctness is complete bull. also, POC's are usually a lot more racist than white people because they don't realize that racism against white people actually counts as racism

don't think his actions so much had to do with him, as a white person, new so much more about her heritage, as he is a perfectionist. she's been eating with chopsticks all her life she said, so she's probably gotten sloppy in her technique, and he as a perfectionist had to correct her (perfectionists are so annoying). Really don't think it had anything to do with him being white that he corrected her. but thanks for trying you racist jerk. People like you make all of us look bad.

implying that white people all imply little subtle racist remarks isn't racist? If assuming everyone of one race behaves a certain way is not racist then I don't know what it.

As a white woman, I fully agree with this statement.

ah....so you are saying be blatently racist because at least it's direct and less insulting I think I'm giving up on political correctness completely, no one appreciates it anyway, the yellow Asian didn't anyway

@14 - I don't think you're seeing the BIG picture! See, the OP is assuming that all Chinese people should know how to use chopsticks... as well as I consider all blacks to be good ballers.

i think the problem #78 has is that fact that white people do have a tendency of being patronizing, even if they don't mean to be. most of the time if a person of any other race sees you doing something wrong, they won't help you until you actually ask for help so you might keep your dignity. it's not that he was trying to help, it's that he thought that he needed to help because he assumed the OP didn't know what they were doing.

you guys are all racist morons. some white people are racist. not all. some people from every race are racist. if you say "_____ people are racist" you're being racist!

Lets face it, some people need to learn tablemanners.. maybe your friend tryed to teach you that?

ghadir 2

uh no..the correct subject would've been chemistry ;) or human anatomy ;) if thats what u were getting at lol

White people strike again. Ha! Hopefully you weren't in some part of Asia when he did it, lolz.

I'm white and had to teach my gf who is chinese how to use chopsticks properly. Lets face it...theres a technique to it and when your brought up doing it you quickly forget it in favour of some scissor motion. I've been to HK. I saw you all doing it wrong....it works but it isn't the proper technique.

Wait. What? You went to Hong Kong once and determined that all of them were using their chopsticks wrong? That's a pretty big call. Is it possible they were maybe just using a different technique? Were they also speaking Chinese wrong because they were using Cantonese rather than Mandarin?

Ajjas013 6

Yeah! Everyone knows there are different chopstick dialects. * Nods head in confirmation*

well if there are then op shouldve told him * slaps op and ajjas with my cheap chopsticks *

There are certain proper ways you're supposed to hold forks, too. But, if you're just eating out somewhere, you don't need to concentrate on exactly how you're holding that fork. As long as you're picking up food and carrying it to your mouth with little spillage, then you're doing it correctly. Same goes with chopsticks, pencils, and anything else you hold in your hands. I hold my fork oddly too because it's a habit I've carried over from my babyhood. It felt awkward when I finally learned how the use a fork formally. It still feels a little awkward. The whole point of eating utensils is to hold food. It's not wrong if their method works. Why be so picky?

this is the same story as the man on the freeway and his wife calls him saying "honey I heard there's a guy on the freeway going the wrong way." he replies "one there's hundreds." sorry mate if everone else is wrong that just means u had it wrong

117 and 135 good call way to use your heads. Like seriously what makes you think your way is proper? Is it because thats what it showed you on the back of the chopsticks?

dragonstrike94 8

Umm excuse me but but ther are multiple ways so... Shutup .... Yea? 8=D

when my dad went to china, when he ate, they were so surprised that he could use them properly being 'westerner' and left handed

LeoMaro 1

Omg. Speaking of being left handed, im Chinese and I'm left handed, my parents don't care since we live in America and all, but when I visited, they were all bashing at me for being left handed as it was my choice. They see being right handed as a panacea to everything...

Many asians do not use chopsticks right. Many people have no manners either ;) I think the op was smart enough not to be offended. The FML is about him having used them wrong his entire life, although it worked, it was not proper (like holding wrongly a fork). This shows real friendship
