Today, after a week of waiting to hear something about my stolen car, I got a letter in the mail saying it had been impounded the same day I reported it stolen, but they don't share a database with the police so they never called. Now the impound wants $900 plus $120 for the tow to release it. FML

If they won't work with you given the circumstances, just make a special trip to the bank and pay them in pennies.

You can't get pennies in Canada anymore.

Pay them the full amount with bins of pennies. They'll have to count it and it's illegal for them to not accept it.

It is actually not illegal to turn down a payment. They can turn down your pennies and demand a different form of payment.

Not necessarily - some countries have the concept of legal tender - for instance, in the UK, people do not have to acceptore than about £2 in coppers.

OP, take ur police report to the impound lot and they should release it to u for little to no charge. might just have to pay the tow fee. good luck.

The lot gets access to your address but is not required to report its seizures to the police? I'd think that a decent percent of impounded cars would be reported as stolen; so, one would assume that some procedure would be in place if even just advising the owner to check impound lots.

Bring the police report and you shouldn't be charged. If the lot has a problem, direct them to the police! :)

I believe that is illegal. All towing companies must report with the police on any towed car. This is not optional, and I would fight it.
