Today, after buying hundreds of dollars worth of Christmas presents, my transmission blew up on the interstate heading home. Now, I either have to return the gifts or not drive over 25. FML

Ask for a new transmission for Christmas.

I would return a couple of gifts and take care of the necessities. There are always birthdays, OP.

just take side streets if you can.

wait how does whether or not you are gonna return christmas gifts relate to your damaged transmission???

Because transmissions don't grow on trees. They cost stupid amounts of money to fix when they go wrong. Let's just do a hypothetical situation here, one that will make this a little more clear. Let's say you have $1000. Reasonable amount of money, you do your Christmas shopping, you get about $400 worth of presents. So you've got $600 in your bank account, and your transmission gives up. Now, let's say, for the sake of this hypothetical situation, that the transmission is really cheap compared to most cars on the road. So it's gonna cost $600 to buy the transmission, and another $400 for the shop to put it in, because people don't work for free. So that's $1000. If you've spent $600, you now need to return all of that stuff you bought in order to afford the new transmission. And chances are, it's actually more expensive than that. Now, there's a chance it could be a transmission shift relay, a solenoid that's gone bad, or some other cheap little part that isn't a very expensive transmission, but there's also the possibility, depending on the OP's car, that the transmission's totally hosed.

If you can spend hundreds of dollars on Christmas presents, then you make enough money to save for an emergency fund. Take back the presents and budget better.

A lot of places, will work out a payment plan with you if it is an expensive job. Just take it in for a diagnostic and ask if you can pay after Christmas or work something out.

If you're driving the highways in Denver, you'll never get up to 25 anyway.

You are entitled to what you bought and not let life try to mess you over. Just go 25. Stick to your guns. You can always get help paying for the trans, or wait till the next paycheck and take other transportation around.

New transmission is expensive, depending on the car. If it's just shot you can still drive alright on it. I had to replace the transmission on a 69 camaro project car i'm working on, not cheap

I'm sure they will understand. If they get mad at you then they don't deserve to be your friend
