Today, after buying the plane ticket to Glendale, CA to visit 17 year old Courtney who I met on a dating website, she called me for the first time to say that she was actually 19 year old Seth from Atlanta, GA. FML

In the United States, age of consent is governed by state law. In California, age of consent is 18. However, sex with minors over sixteen and less than three years younger than the older person is legal - this is called a closeness of age clause. So, assuming the OP is sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, or twenty, having sex with 'Courtney' would have been legal. The OP is certainly not a pedophile. By the time the vast majority of women have reached seventeen, they are completely sexually developed. Pedophiles are attracted to children who have not yet begun puberty, not seventeen year old girls.

either you're young enough that 17 is acceptable, in which case you're probably in high school and shouldn't be flying to meet an online date, but should be involved in relationships with people you know, and probably should have some parental guidance on how unbelievably awkward it is that someone so young fly to meet an internet date.... or you're older and you might have a reason for using internet to help you meet people, such as crazy work hours and kids etc. making it difficult to meet people, in which case it's totally unacceptable to be flying to meet a 17yo. perhaps a webcam is cheaper than a plane ticket?
