Today, after opening a letter from the VA, I found out that I have to pay back all the money I earned last year in the Army. I just spent $500 on Christmas presents. Payments start in January. FML

Why on earth do you have to pay it back? Appeal it to whatever military court handles issues like that, and if you can't, take it higher to a tribunal!

Why would you have to pay back all the money you earned?

I know a few months back there was going to be a mass repayment of enlistment bonuses but I thought it was thrown out the window. I'd check it out with some sort of authority.

If you're not already a member of the DAV (disabled American veterans) become a member and then ask them to be your advocate, they are very good at straightening out messes and they know what's right and wrong and they have lawyers that will help you. I had a friend who convinced me to become a lifetime member when I got out when I was having all types of difficulties, and they were a great help.

If this is not a scam, which has I highly suspect it is, you should be able to make payment arrangements. If I were you I would call, not the number on the letter you received but call the numbers that you already know to call. if nothing else look up the number online but DO NOT call the number in the letter. Good luck, and Merry Christmas.

I've been there before. I got a letter saying I owed them $5000. I didn't actually owe it but they sure thought I did. They withheld my benefits for over two years until it was paid back. About a year after that my appeal finally went through but it was hell.

Sounds like crap. Why would you have to pay back your paycheck that you earned. I would go to the VA and speak to somebody about that. Bring the letter to reference it.

They give you hundred dollars, and take back 99.

Get to the VA quickly. Verify that the letter is real. If it is - start writing your legislators, congresspersons, and maybe even local news outlets. If the charges are correct, you might be able to get a different payment arrangement. Good luck, I am sorry for the anxiety of such a letter, and thank you for serving our country.

This happened to me as well. After active duty and being given a disability rating, I had to pay back a years worth of drill pay as well as work the next two years of my contract for free. Gotta love the military.
