Someone who actually cares for their child's safety
I would have called the cops without saying anything to her.
You should've called an employee and said you found a baby left alone in the crib. Serves the woman right.
OP is an employee
You definitely should have taken the child and called CPS. This woman should not be allowed to have children.
I don't think OP has the ability to take the child. Social workers are trained in ethics and signs of abuse, which is why they are given the ability to decided to take children away. OP has no such ability. If OP took the child and the mother demanded she give her the child back, OP could face criminal charges, even if the mother is an idiot.
But if OP would have taken the unattended child to the office and called the cops, they could hopefully get there before the self absorbed mother knew the baby was missing. OP wouldn't get in trouble because it was an abandoned child.
It depends on a lot of things that we don't know. I know at the retail store I work at, I wouldn't be allowed to touch the baby unless I had a very strong personal relationship with the parents outside of work. I just don't want some poor teenager to see this and automatically think that taking the child would be okay (because let's be honest: some people believe anything). It all depends on the policies at OP's store.
that makes me madder than I can say. how dare she......
Report her to the cops.
Sounds like it's time for social services.
Call CPS.
how is this a FML? Yeah, people are dumb and this should be reported to CPS for child neglect. FML is not CPS
Anybody could have easily picked up the baby and walked off! Kids are kidnapped all the time. That's crazy. Now if it a manager would pick up and take the baby after she walked off and called someone about it, THEN I'm sure she would have gotten what she deserves. Thinking someone kidnapped her kid AND get reported.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
