Today, five minutes before closing, a woman came in to buy over $300 worth of clothing from the sales rack. My manager and I had to ring it all up, de-sensor it, fold it, bag it, etc. After it was all rung up, her credit card was declined. FML

IntoTheClouds tells us more.

So I couldn't fit the whole story into the FML, but we actually didn't have to re-stock everything (and for the record, there was a huge sale going on, so she got, like, fifty shirts). Her credit card got declined. She then tried writing a check, but her check was apparently declined (my manager had taken over the register at that point). She spent ten minutes calling her friends, who were in the mall, to get them to come and help, but none of them came, and then she tried another credit card she had, and finally it went through. It was extremely frustrating, because my manager and I missed the bus, which we needed to get home.

Sometimes customer service sucks. But at least your manager knows you're a hard worker!

#39 - When working in a store the most irritating thing is someone coming in a few minutes before closing time. Closing up shop can take ages and someone coming in at the last minute and undoing all your preparation is annoying as all hell - it taking so long that you miss the bus of course just makes it that bit worse!

I was just reading FMLs from the random section the day before this.... one was with a girl trying to buy $300 of clothing at Kohls but her card got declined lol

Yeah last minute shoppers are no fun, but honestly you were probably scheduled to stay longer for clean up anyway so this doesn't sound like a big deal

You realize that $300 on the "sales rack" could be quite a lot of items that now need to be unbagged, sorted, hung up, re-sendored, put away etc... It's just added stuff on top of the already clean up that had to be done. I can sympathize with the OP.

It depends on how long until after closing they were stuck waiting. At my work we are only scheduled to stay back half hour past closing which this easily could have taken that long. They could have had to stay back later or made more work for themselves in the morning.

At my last job the lights in the whole store (except security lights) went out 10 minutes after the store was scheduled to close. If you didn't have everything done by then other than management going through closing procedures You were just screwed. That still didn't stop jackasses from staying over by Almost half an hour even with the lights out. So no, not all places stay over closing time by that much, and assuming they do and that it makes it ok to linger as long as you want makes you an ass.

That's ridiculous! We control the lights aty work. Only the music goes off automatically.

Right. Because the employees just stand around with their thumb up their asses when the store closes, right?

Sounds like you're a hard worker OP and good on you for being kind & putting up with it, I bet it was quite the embarrassment for her as well.

Who goes anywhere to buy stuff without knowing how much money you have. I'm constantly checking my debit and pay card balance

I've had my credit card declined/denied serval times. Not because I was over my balance but because of THEIR fraud alerts that put a hold on my card until I called customer service to prove that it was me using the card. I switched companies because it happened too often with them.

So next time we swipe the card first. Sorry op

If she kept buying things like that on her card, it's not really surprising that it declined at $300 of clothing.

I'd have way more sympathy for her if 1) she was only buying the five things she'd originally come to the register with, and 2) she'd bought the stuff when she came in two hours earlier. When she found out the t-shirts she was buying were $8 each, she went back and forth to the sales rack and took all of those t-shirts off the rack, and, while we were ringing everything up, continued shopping for things.

The ride home really messed up your day. Double FML there.

43, how does OP sound like a jerk? do you know how much $350 worth of clothes that's ON SALE is? that's a lot. not only did they have to attend the lady, I'm sure they also had to put things back in order for the next day. Have you ever worked retail? it's frustrating.

Seriously? That is an FML to you that you did your job and missed a bus? Quit whining, will you

Yeah, I don't see how she was being a jerk. I work in retail, and I want to be home at a decent time. People who come in two minutes before closing are basically saying, "I don't care if you have kids at home to put to bed, you have school in the morning, you need to pick someone up, etc. I want a shirt, so I'm buying a shirt."

That's why whenever I go last minute shopping if there's an hour left before closing I don't bother.

#43:You have obviously never worked at a restaurant, pharmacy, or at a retail store where people love to come a few minutes before closing which forces you to stay after closing time and cater to their needs. It's annoying.

Obviously some of these replies have either never worked when closing a store or never wrote a FML and realize the small space you have to write in. Next time you see the lady and it's near close, close the doors and hide. I'm kidding.

This woman sounds like an idiot. I've been on both sides of this FML, working when someone came in at the last minute and holding me up, AND having my card declined. Thing is, if your CREDIT card is declined, and you don't actually have any real money to buy $300 dollars worth of clothes with, why on EARTH would you keep trying different cards and call your friends?! I'm not saying good friends wouldn't try and help out but I would never expect a friend to come pay $300 dollars for me to buy t-shirts.

People that have never worked in retail don't really understand how frustrating it can be to have someone come in a few minutes before closing. I've had a similar experience OP. When I was working in retail we had a woman come in 5 minutes to close. We were extremely polite and attentive, we were trying to get her out of there so we could leave. She was extremely rude, and came up to the counter with $600 worth of merchandise. We were actually okay with that since we needed the large sale, but what upset us was that she got upset because it was so much. First, we don't set the prices and second, when you choose to buy one of almost everything, it gets expensive. Her card was also declined. She ended up splitting the cost between some cash she had, a check and 2 credit cards. After she ransacked the pile of clothes on the counter and tossed out the clothes she didn't need onto the floor. She ended up only spending $200 and we left over an hour and a half after closing. Sorry for the novel.

The people saying you sound like a jerk for being upset about her card being declined have obviously never worked in retail. I know how this feels, and it's awfully annoying to deal with.

Damn, I'm sorry op :( Is this an american thing that you can't throw people out if a store is closing? Over here, they will announce it through speakers first "this store is closing in 30 minutes. Please finish your shopping" (along those lines) and usually 30 to 15 minutes before closing the fitting rooms will close (also announced). If you're not done by the actual closing time employees will ask you if you still need help with something and politely ask you to hurry up/finish your shopping. If that doesn't help and you show no signs of leaving, you will be thrown out, simple as that.

And it's people like you who make my job so much easier. I commend you for your common courtesy.

Actually, I have. I worked at a bank and there was a customer who would frequently come in just before closing on Friday and deposit a crazy amount of cash and change from his cash-only business. But my job was to take care of customers and so that's what I did.

OP said it didn't fit in the original FML

I finished the sentence in my head the way it was meant. It wasn't until now that I realized the final word in your original comment. I'll give you a thumbs up because it caught me off-guard.

Couldn't you have just stated that you were closed? Or if she really wanted the clothes instead of waiting for her to ring up friends etc, why not suggest putting the clothes aside and she could come back another time to collect them?

Some companies actually don't allow you to close the registers until all the customers are done shopping. Even worse you can't tell them you're closed and have to wait until they decide they're done shopping.

I work retail and if someone comes in we have to stay open and continue working as late as they stay there, even for just one customer.

And honestly, so people just don't care. A couple once came into the story I work at two minutes before we closed. Ten minutes after closing, my manager came up to them and told them that we were closed and asked if he could help them find anything. They said, "No, we're just browsing" and continued "just browsing" till thirty minutes after closing.

A similar thing happened at my work recently. We can't close the registers until all the customers are out (LP issue I guess) and we had 2 customers "trying to decide" for 40 minutes. Eventually my manager told them she would put the shoes on hold but couldn't delay closing any longer.
