Today, for my birthday, my family offered to take one of my friends to the movies with me. I had to pay a random person in my class to pose as a friend of mine, so that I wouldn't look pathetic in front of my parents. She forgot my name three times. They didn't buy it. FML

I think it sucks that you can't be open with your parents, OP. It isn't your job to take care of them. They're grown-ups - they can handle the facts and be proud of you anyway. Maybe if you had that pressure off, you would be carefree to make friends. Just a thought.

Honestly, they're your parents. You shouldn't feel pathetic in front of them. They'll wonder why you don't have friends and comfort you, but they shouldn't make you feel worse.
