Today, for my girlfriend's birthday, I got her an external hard drive and my grandmother's engagement ring. When she opened both boxes, I took her hand and looked deep in her eyes and told her to pick whichever she wanted. She took the external hard drive, even though she already has one. FML

You sure she just wasn't joking? Maybe she accepted the external hard drive as the proposal. I'd probably do the same thing.

No. This is good. You found out the truth. No you can dump her and get on with your life. Be glad she didn't take your family's ring and then let you know.

@ # 99: she A. probably didnt know it was his Grandma's engagement ring. b. probably thinks he's a lame ass boyfriend for buying her a birthday present that you KNOW she already has. C. he didnt propose, he just "looked deeply in to her eyes" and said "pick the HD or this ring". usually when people propose, or give a promise ring, they talk about it and say "hey, this ring is really important to me, i'd like you to have it..." or "will you marry me?" at the very least. this guy is really clueless, so yes your life is ****** in that way. Best of luck next time. maybe you should consult your friends before you do something idiotic and lose that girl.

That's not a shitty way to propose. It's called being creative. She either really doesn't want to be engaged just yet, or she's a dumbass. Either way, that sucks.

rewrite: Today my bf of _ years gave me an engagement ring, but he then made me choose between it and a external Hard Drive for no particular reason. I was so pissed off that i chose the HD. FML

Sorry, man, but that's not a proposal. That's giving your girlfriend a choice between a shiny electronic and a shiny piece of jewelry. Lots of us ladies would pick the electronic. And did you even tell her that was your grandma's engagement ring? Just learn from this experience and try again. :)
