Today, for my girlfriend's birthday, I got her an external hard drive and my grandmother's engagement ring. When she opened both boxes, I took her hand and looked deep in her eyes and told her to pick whichever she wanted. She took the external hard drive, even though she already has one. FML

Well....I mean.... This is gonna be harsh, but I'd be pretty disappointed if my boyfriend proposed to me like that. It's supposed to be romantic, you know? This just doesn't ...sparkle?... enough. I don't know. Maybe she was hitting the refresh key. Try again later?

why the hell wouldn't you JUST get her the ring if she already had an external HD???

You didn't even say "will you marry me"..? I agree with most of the comments here, I would have said no to my boyfriend if he involved any sort of computer hardware in the proposal. Instead he had the sense to surprise me by coming home on Christmas and proposing beneath a bridge on a hiking trail. Do you see the difference?

Rings are symbolic. Hard drives are useful.

Why the hell would you give your girlfriend something that belongs to your grandmother? You're supposed to keep that ring for yourself. What if she suddenly decides to break up with you, are you just gonna have to go and say: "I'd like my grandma's engagement ring back please" Don't be dumb, seriously man. Have some respect for your family's precious possessions

If it was me, I'd have felt really bad because I would want the harddrive :( I don't like jewelry. But if I wanted to say yes, it would still be unsatisfying because I wouldn't get the damn HD.

:( #34: A lot of men propose to their girlfriends using mothers or grandmothers engagement rings. It has more sentimental value ... I would actually be thrilled if my boyfriend proposed with his mother's ring, because it's beautiful and wouldn't cost him a dime.

What the hell kind of proposal is that???

Also agree with 36. And to answer your question 34, yes, you ask for the ring back if you split. A girl would have to be a total **** to ever keep any engagement ring if she called it off.
