Today, I accidentally showed up 5 minutes late for my shift. My boss mercifully declared that I would not be fired if I called my mother and told her I love her. My mom died 11 years ago. FML

Just pick up the phone, pretend to dial any number, and start pouring your heart out to the dial tone.

"Why did you bring a medium into the office?" "You said I had to contact my mother to tell her that I loved her. Mom died 11 years ago, come join the seance, Boss."

sorry they are going to fire you just for being five minutes late? was it the first time..? and then to for you because you are not able to do their stupid task because you physically can't is just ridiculous and cruel. I feel like it would be helpful if you elaborated on a few points OP and did a follow-up?

pretty sure this sounds like the boss was trying to play a harmless joke that went south

Well, you could ask your boss if s/he knows a good medium because that's the only way you're able to contact your mom.

Hello... Hey it’s Nancy Ardon ... would you be able to put my mother on the phone?....... I know she’s six feet under ground I need you to dig her up so I can tell her that I love her...... Because my Boss told me too or I’m fired...... Yes I know my boss is being a jackass....

I assume he felt bad and dropped it.

Call the cemetery and leave a message. Was that so hard?

There's so many issues with FML. First of all, where do people get fired for being 5 minutes late? Unless it's a reoccurring issue and you were already on your final warning in which case fine. Secondly, what kind of a requirement is that? Surely that's personal and no grounds for anyone's employment? Unless your boss is your relative or something? Calling BS on this one

it's called a "Right to Work" state which really means you have the right to be fired for no reason or a bs reason
