Today, I went back to school after missing the first 2 weeks of the new school year. I got grilled in my first lesson by my teacher for "gallivanting around on holiday in some sunny place" when I should've been at school learning. My dad had died from liver cancer. FML

Today, my English teacher asked me why I didn't have my project completed. Thinking quick on my feet, I told her it was because my grandmother had just passed away. Apparently they go to the same country club and have known each other for years. My teacher started crying and ran out of the room. FML

Today, a parent came into my class and told one of my 6 year-old students that their grandma died. Then the parent left. The kid started crying from the news, which then got all the other students crying. I spent the rest of the day comforting a class of kids crying over someone else's grandma. FML

Wow- so much hate against teachers! OP could have easily had a very good reason to accuse the student of cheating. By this point in the school year the teacher should be quite familiar with their students' work and its not difficult to spot a significant change in quality. Not a great idea to single out the dad specifically as the one who did the work, but if he's been dead for two years it was probably not ignorance or insensitivity but an honest mistake on OP's part.

You should never ever accuse a student of doing something wrong unless you know it's true! I'm sure you really hurt that students feelings. You should really apologize and make sure he's okay.
