Today, I announced to my friends that my grandmother is dying. My best friend pulled out his phone and casually announced, "Technically, everyone is dying." FML

He's not wrong, but I am sorry for your situation.

Technically he's right, but it's still rude for him to say that.

Wow, that's the sort of irreverent smartass I would be PROUD to call my friend. I'd take him over an empathetic dumbass any day. I'd rather be around people who will make me smile than the ones who will frown alongside me... Just a personal preference.

He isn't Wrong but you don't say that to a person

He's not wrong he's just an asshole.

Sorry about your grandmother OP. And that your friend was insensitive in that situation. I won't pass judgement because I don't know him. I hope he's not an ass, but some people really just don't know how to react with news like that. People just say the wrong things (guilty!)

sadly he is correct, but doesnt mean that you openly announce it in that situation.

You should've said "Technically, you're an asshole."

Op should've said something along the lines of "while that's technically true, 'everyone else' still has several years before they die. My grandma on the other hand, doesn't even have a month. But thanks for pointing that out douche."

I had a friend who said that to me once... notice the past tense? If your friend is that callous about this instance, you have to wonder what other things they have a nonchalant attitude about. I didn't wonder and I wasted 3 more years thinking that this person was a friend when really they weren't.

is it just me or it seems a bit inappropriate that you used the word" announced" on your family member dying like it's some exciting event.

Announcements can be negative too, however I agree it seems like an odd wording. We often hear that word in association with big events, so it sounds weird to "announce" someone's poor health.
