Then that's when you say "technically, you deserve this" then punch him in the nose.
I'm gonna need more context to judge. Was there a whole dramatic build up and then just a vague pronouncement of impending death, with no relevant details or anything, followed by silence waiting for waves of sympathy? Was this a complete non sequitur interrupting an otherwise humorous conversation? Because a snarky person like myself would probably have responded exactly the same way to try to lighten the mood and open it up for you to give further details if it was something you were comfortable talking about. Now, if it was delivered with an explanation and proper setup for something of that gravity, or was a response to a question, yeah, dick move. Maybe just trying to deal with the awkward situation with humour and failing to judge the mood properly. Maybe very uncomfortable with the topic and desperate to change the subject. No matter how you call it, botched the social roll there.
your friend is a callous bastard
"Best friend" Sorry OP!
I would've made him "technically" dead
Slap the phone out of his hands.
Isnt that what best friends do usually? Thats what my experience is.

He's not wrong, but I am sorry for your situation.
Technically he's right, but it's still rude for him to say that.
